History
E3 Design Group, Inc. was formed as a Subchapter S corporation in State of Florida on October 1, 2002 after its founders, Dr. John R. Kiefer and David M. Brown had spent approximately six months testing the Southwest Florida market for residential lighting design and lighting control system design services. During this time, E3 also worked on building diagnostics and forensics. While these services were clearly in demand, it was apparent that architects and builders, the target market for these services, were desirous of having a single design source which included mechanical, energy, electrical and plumbing design (MEP) in addition to lighting based products. E3’s work in the diagnostic and forensic arena enabled the (MEP) department to better understand the do’s and don’ts of system design.
E3 quickly expanded its scope to offer these services. The company also negotiated an arrangement with Lutron Electronics whereby E3 provided “factory startup” services for Lutron Homeworks, a sophisticated residential lighting control system. Brown and Kiefer were the first non-Lutron employees ever to provide these services in the U.S. market. E3 also qualified as a distributor of lighting fixture products for Cooper Industries and several other manufacturers.
In 2004, E3 expanded into Energy Rating Services and began testing and certifying homes for the Energy Star Program. After signing contracts with builders such as Centex and Pulte Homes, E3 quickly became the State of Florida’s largest energy rater. In 2008, E3 Building Sciences completed 60% of all Energy Star Home certifications in the State of Florida. Our success with ratings, testing, building forensics, and system engineering lead us towards Green. E3’s approach had always been to build systems that were sustainable, so Green Building was a natural transition.
